🇺🇸 Best Restaurants in Juneau Alaska

juneau restaurants

When you think of Juneau Alaska you might think of beautiful mountains, salmon, bears, and glaciers, and you would be right.

What you may not think about is that Juneau is a vibrant food destination, and this is where you would be wrong.

The food scene in Juneau is very much alive in its varied and diverse offerings.

I was pleasantly surprised about how many good Juneau restaurants there were to eat and drink at during my recent visit to America’s second largest city by land mass.

Dwarfed by the many cruise ships that visit Juneau, the city sits on the water’s edge waiting to welcome the over a million visitors a year that drop by this sleepy Alaskan port as a stop on their exploration of Alaska.

These visitors, as well as any other  arrivals, are no doubt delighted when they realize that so many potential gastronomic treats are waiting for them in the space of a couple of blocks in each direction.

Alaskan seafood is some of the best in the world, and there is a foraging culture that is excited about the inclusion of a lot of what Alaska naturally offers being included using local ingredients in local dishes by so many chefs.

It’s not only food that is plentiful in downtown Juneau, there are also a healthy number of local watering holes where you can get a good drink.

I had the best gin and tonic I think I have ever had at the Amalga Distillery, where they use locally harvested botanicals when making their gin.

The tonic is also made in-house making the combination an outstanding libation to be enjoyed.

And the good food is not only served in brick and mortar establishments, some of the best fare is offered up in one of the many food trucks operating either out of the food truck lot right downtown, or in the lot of the Arts and Cultural Center not far away.

Now for the best restaurants in Juneau Alaska!

Tracy’s King Crab Shack

This is the place for some of the best crab you can ever dream of having.

King crab legs, crab bisque, and crab cakes are on the menu here.

All served in a very unique setting of various ‘shacks’ where food and drinks are sent to the picnic table style benches, with a good view of the harbor.

This is the most delicious selection of crab you will find in Southeast Alaska.

A good breakfast, brunch, and lunch place, where you can get a very good cup of coffee.

Sandwiches, burgers, salads, and an array of egg dishes this restaurant is definitely worth a visit, or two.

Be sure to try their outstanding fried chicken sandwich, you won’t be sorry.

American, Seafood$$$$

When you are looking for a place that is more on the formal side, where the food is good, and the ambiance comfortable.

With a wide variety of food served, you can get a nice piece of meat, chicken, fish, or even a nice sesame tofu dish.

Sandbar and Grill

American, Seafood | $$$$

The food at Sandbar and Grill is definitely impressive.

If you can overlook lackluster service and a dive atmosphere, then you will be treated to some of the freshest seafood.

One of the most talked about meals is the fish and chips which just melts in your mouth.

The chicken strips are pretty darn good as well.

In Bocca Al Lupo

Italian, Pizza$$$$

With its open kitchen and wood fired oven, this non traditional looking restaurant serves the best and tastiest traditional Italian food.

Pizza is a sure winner on the menu with a lot to choose from; my favorite being the Gorgonzoloft, with gorgonzola and pine nuts.

Be sure not to overlook the potato gnocchi with locally grown ingredients.

Zerelda’s Bistro

American, Vegetarian, Vegan | $$$$

This is one of the few places outside of town, and yet well worth going to.

The menu offers up simple dishes with a touch of fusion ranging from Southern to Asian, and all done with a real flair.

It’s a small space so I would recommend dinner reservations so as not to be disappointed.

If you are lucky enough to have the Korean beef brisket on the menu, try it.

You’ll be happy you did.

Delicious fish tacos served here, with a nice covered beer garden.

No question one of the best meals in Juneau served from a food truck.

The flavors in these tacos are heavenly, especially when mixed with a nice cold beer.
