Having the right dip for your food on many occasions will make your meal.

Garlic alone has numerous health benefits and cilantro is the same.

It’s highly nutritious, and a staple in many homes in countries around the Middle East.

Combine these ingredients together in a cilantro garlic sauce and wham!

We don’t need any excuse to add more of this delicious sauce to our food.

What Is Cilantro Garlic Sauce?

cilantro garlic sauce

Cilantro garlic sauce is flavored with cilantro, garlic, yogurt, along with mayonnaise.

Along with the other main ingredient, lime juice, which gives a unique zing of a flavor.

The sauce is thickened by adding sour cream.

It becomes a wonderful dip for chips or vegetable sticks.

A fresh bunch of cilantro, and juicy garlic cloves is your base for a fantastic tasting sauce.

There are some recipes where extra virgin olive oil is added to the cilantro sauce like you would for a chimichurri sauce.

But most often the differences in cilantro sauces will be the difference in ratios of mayonnaise and yogurt.

All in all, an unusual sauce with a dramatically different flavor that is definitely worth a try!

There is so much to like about this combination of super powerful foods packed with benefits.

Cilantro and garlic are packed with antioxidants, with the ability to detoxify your body.

And the best part, like so many things that are good for you, they taste delicious in combination with each other!

They are delicious separately and they are delicious together, making them a dynamic duo like!

How To Make Cilantro Garlic Sauce

The ingredients are simple, and yet the outcome makes an extraordinary sauce everytime.

To keep this sauce on the lighter side I like to use half yogurt and half mayonnaise in this recipe.

This recipe will also work if you want to use 100% yogurt or 100% mayonnaise.

Starting with a fresh bunch of cilantro, I wash, then pluck off all the leaves, discarding the stems.

I choose generous sized garlic cloves to make sure I get some deep garlic flavor.

Place the yogurt and mayonnaise into a blender or food processor.

Add the cilantro leaves, garlic cloves, along with the salt, pepper, and lime juice.

Blend or process until you have a smooth, somewhat runny sauce, that may or may not have bits of garlic in it.

Either way it will be tasty, and you will have a sauce for all occasions.

You can keep this sauce in the fridge in a sealed container for a week to ten days.

What To Use The Sauce On

You can add this cilantro garlic sauce to so many dishes.

Definitely a great addition to steak, or any kind of meat for that matter.

It really is a versatile sauce, and perfect with raw veggies.

Chicken wings are also an excellent choice to dip in this cilantro garlic sauce.

It’s also a favorite for my falafel wraps and shawarma sandwiches.

The flavors perfectly balance out well with a majority of Middle Eastern food.

Wherever I can use it, I experiment!

This is how I discovered it’s an excellent dip for fries!

Can I Freeze It?

Absolutely!

Store in an airtight container or a freezer bag; make sure to express as much air out of the container as possible.

It should keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.

When defrosting, just place in the fridge the night before.

What Does Cilantro/Coriander Taste Like?

In the US cilantro is the name given to the fresh coriander plant, while the name coriander is given to the dry ground seeds of the same plant.

In the UK, the word coriander serves both purposes and the word cilantro is not used.

Cilantro tastes fresh, citrusy, spicy, nutty and warm, and some would use the word soapy because of a floral component.

The dry version of coriander has a sweet, earthy, and somewhat tart taste.

Both the flavors are very different and are often used in very different cooking situations.

Whether you eat the fresh plants or dry spice will inform the flavor you experience.

Many people love the taste of cilantro while some will say that it tastes a little like soap.

Very good in salad and other fresh dishes like salsa, coleslaw, or dips, it can add a crisp seasoning.

Or they like the taste of coriander but not cilantro and vice versa, depending on what they are used to.

Tips For Making

  • Using a thick Greek style yogurt will give you the best results, as well as when using a high quality mayonnaise.
  • Fresh lime juice will enhance the flavor, and you can even add the zest for a different twist in this recipe.
  • Putting fresh ground black pepper in this recipe can make a big difference to the final taste.
